4-C PEOPLE IN SPORTS 0 AP Growing pains Bryan Darrow, 4, tries to play catch with a friend using equipment he borrowed from his dad's softball team before their game in Penn Yan, N.Y. Reese finally proving 'he is worth a damn' COMPILED FROM WIRE REPORTS Three years after his "I'm Not Worth a Damn" article for Sports Illustrated became the definitive story on drug abuse in the National Football League, Don Reese is making a pro football comeback at 33. Reese, a defensive lineman who was the Dolphins' No. 1 draft choice in 1974, had been out of football for three years when Rollie Dotsch, who coaches the Birmingham Stallions of the United States Football League, asked him last year if he wanted to play again. Dotsch asked at the right time.

One good thing to say about Reese now is he passed a urine test with Birmingham. But it took eight months, according to Reese, for the league to make up its mind to let him play. Then it took some more time in training camp this year for Reese to convince himself that the physical punishment he was enduring was worth it. "The first day I came back I thought, 'Well, It didn't feel that bad. But for a while after that, there were lots of times where I tried to go home.

I figured I'd just quit and that'd be it. But every time I tried to leave, somebody would pull me back." Reese is not kidding anyone. He knows he's not to be confused with the player who in 1979 led the New Orleans Saints in sacks and was voted the club's most valuable defensive player. 2 Still, he began the season as a starter and had two sacks in his first three games. Then Mike Perko, an injured regular, returned and Reese has been a spot player.

A back injury that has forced him to miss two games has not helped. Madlock wants anti-drug program Pittsburgh Pirates captain Bill Madlock, admittedly "sick" of answering questions about a federal grand jury's probe of drug trafficking that reportedly involves players, is urging baseball to begin an anti-drug program to counsel new players. Madlock, 34, an 11-year veteran and four-time National League batting champion, said baseball players sometimes reach the majors almost fresh out of high school, unlike pro football players, who usually spend four or five years maturing in college. "All of a sudden these young guys, who might be immature, are making a lot of money and have a lot of time on their hands They're in a strange town where they don't know anybody and they can fall into the wrong crowd," Madlock said. "I know when I first came up, it took me three or four years to relax.

I didn't know who to turn to, who to talk to." Madlock's program would involve not only successful former major leaguers, such as the Pirates' Willie Stargell, but a player like former 30-game winner Denny McLain, who has encountered serious social and legal problems since ending his career. That's Spend a Buck Is it Spend A Buck or Spend a Buck? Does the Kentucky Derby winner spell his name with the capitalized or is it lower case? It's Spend a Buck, according to the Jockey Club, clearing house for horse registration. A check by the club on the original application submitted by owner Dennis Diaz, has the definitely down. Chicago Black Hawks center Troy Murray on playing with seven stitches in his forehead and a possible broken nose: "It hurts." GLAD YOU ASKED Q- What is meant by the expression "hot stove league?" Bill Lebecka, Rocky River. A Long ago, before the advent of television, baseball fans used to gather around the stove in the local hangout on winter and nights and talk about the grand old game.

And this was called the "hot stove league" as they'd talk trades, batting averages, prospects of the area team, etc. Now they watch the tube.
